FIRE
Yeah, Yeah, Come on
Here we go y'all, dig this baby
You don't care for me
I don't care about that
You got a new fool, ha!
I like it like that
I got only one burnin' desire
Let me stand next to your fire
(Let me stand next to your fire)
Let me stand
(Let me stand next to your fire)
Let me stand
(Let me stand next to your fire)
Let me stand
(Let me stand next to your fire)
Whoo
Listen here now, stop actin' so crazy
You say your momma ain't home, it ain't my concern
If you play with me, nah you won’t get burned
I have only one itchin' desire let me stand next to your fire
(Let me stand next to your fire) Let me stand baby
(Let me stand next to your fire) Let me stand
(Let me stand next to your fire) Let me stand
(Let me stand next to your fire) Yeah, Yeah
Whoo, move over now, come on Stevie go on and take over
Show em how you do it, Play that thing, Yeah, Yeah Yeah
Listen, check it out, that’s what I am talkin about
Move over now
You try to give me your money, you better save it babe
Save it baby for a rainy day
I have only one itchin' desire, let me stand next to your fire,
(Let me stand next to your fire) I wanna stand
(Let me stand next to your fire) Let me stand
(Let me stand next to your fire) I wanna I wanna stand
(Let me stand next to your fire) Oh yeah, yeah, yeah
Baby let me stand, come on, take me higher, Hah, oh yeah, let me stand, whoo, come on, yeah

WHO STARTED THE FIRE?
My producer Barry Coffing played this powerhouse Jimi Hendrix tune in bands for years, and had the killer idea of having me present it from a female perspective. The irony of this recording is that while Hendrix had an all-white band behind him, we cut this with a white guitarist and a black rhythm section. Like the color code was reversed!
I was open to the idea of doing covers on my debut album, but I’ve always been a big believer in the notion that as a female, do not remake a well-known song originated by a female artist. It had to be a dude song because if you redo a female artist, you’re gonna see all those nuances slap you in the face and cries of “She didn’t hit that note right.”
“Fire” is basically a relationship song saying if I could be next to you, even if you’ve got a new fool, I still want to stand next to your fire and greatness. The programmed loop Herman Matthews played over was ridiculous. It’s a great funky song and the way it moves is beyond cool. An interesting side note: We ended up recording the vocals in a soundproof closet in the Playa Del Rey office of Ruth McCartney, Paul’s stepsister.
